Don’t Use Erasers: Hannah’s Story on Finding Beauty in Mistakes

I met Hannah Marie, an art therapist, counselor, and menstrual health educator who’s spent years helping people reconnect with their creativity — and with themselves.

During our conversation, she shared something her first art mentor once told her:

“Throw away your eraser.”

At first, it sounded like an art tip. But as she spoke, I realized it was something deeper — a philosophy about life.

She talked about how the marks we try to hide — the wrong lines, the false starts, the moments we wish we could take back — are often the very things that make our stories real.
That perfectionism can be a kind of fear. And that sometimes the most honest thing we can do is stop trying to fix ourselves and start creating from where we are.

In this conversation, you’ll hear:

  • Why Hannah tells her students not to use erasers — in art and in life.
  • How creativity helps us see mistakes as part of the process.
  • What it means to build self-trust after years of disconnection.
